Our Company History
Pneumex owned by Gerry and Karin Cook, was founded in 1987 by Gerry, an industrial management engineer. He received an SBIR grant to produce a rehabilitation bike with a hydraulic pedal system. To do this, he worked very
closely with a physical therapist (Gary Lusin), a bio-mechanist (Dr. Ellen Kreighbaum), and an orthopedic surgeon (Dr. John
Hamberg). This group wanted Gerry to develop a knee machine that was concentric-concentric, eliminating the shearing action
on the knee. The Pneumex Rehabilitation Cylinder was the first rehabilitation device Cook marketed. The Cooks
were approached by a group of therapists from Montreal, Canada, to build an affordable back chair. The first Pneu-Back
Chair™ was developed in 1989 with the help of Bob Sydenham, P.T., and David Lamb, P.T well-known Canadian manual therapists.
In 1991, Pneumex was asked by Frank Furtado, the Trainer for the Seattle Supersonics, to build a pneumatic unweighting
unit. He had a player with a stress fracture in his foot, Frank wanted to unweight him to assist in rehabilitation.
Thus, the Pneu-Weight™ was developed. It has been extremely successful both for rehabilitation and overspeed training. The latest major addition to the Pneumex equipment family came with the addition of vibration and our
development of the Pneu-Vibe products for rehabilitation and performance training that provides “I can’t believe
it” results.
